Is there a trick to the "Last Stand" event you find in caves/dungeons? (lemmy.fmhy.ml)

It's the event where you find an injured adventurer and two of their companions. They want you to protect them from the waves of enemies but they get melted within the first 10 seconds or so no matter how much I clear the waves. I'm lvl 56 playing T3 and I'm using a melee rogue with really good AoE damage.

Is there a trick to luring the enemies away from the survivors and towards me?

For me, I just spam frost nova when the crowds get super close to them and then ice shard them to death. Each of my kills also explode in fireballs so they all pop off like little grenades killing each other. It's all about DPS and killing them fast enough versus luring them away.
