They completely redesigned the face of Sonic and rerendered all the 3D scenes after getting social media feedback. Comparison:

No they apparently had a ton of merchandise featuring ugly sonic that they decided to just destroy/throw out instead of trying to sell it. Idk why, I woulda totally bought an ugly sonic T-shirt.
Wow, really? I'm still not convinced that it wasn't viral marketing, but that would be pretty damning...
For full transparency I never verified that claim, but it would not be the most outlandish failure I've heard of. And at least they actually fixed the problem. Remember Cats?

Ugly Sonic was the best cameo in the Chip and Dale movie.
