A place to share alternatives to popular online services that can be self-hosted without giving up privacy or locking you into a service you don't control.

Rules:

  1. Be civil: we're here to support and learn from one another. Insults won't be tolerated. Flame wars are frowned upon.

  2. No spam posting.

  3. Posts have to be centered around self-hosting. There are other communities for discussing hardware or home computing. If it's not obvious why your post topic revolves around selfhosting, please include details to make it clear.

  4. Don't duplicate the full text of your blog or github here. Just post the link for folks to click.

  5. Submission headline should match the article title (don’t cherry-pick information from the title to fit your agenda).

  6. No trolling.

The best thing about nextcloud is its apps/plugin ecosystem. It's basically a hub for self-hosted apps. Want self-hosted Google docs alternative with collaborative document editing feature? You can do it with nextcloud. Want self-hosted Google meet too? You bet it, you can. Want to add email client to next could? You can. Want to setup SSO for your other apps? Nextcloud can be setup as an OIDC provider. Want to setup a complex rule-bases file access control for your small business? Nextcloud can absolutely do it.

If you just want remote file storage system, there are many lightweight alternatives though.

Mostly just to sync a password database from phone and computer, and caldav, carddav, and notes sync, joplin. Didn't realize nc was so bloated.

"bloat" is thrown around so lightly that it loses all meaning.

Fwiw those features are implemented as "apps" and you can disable them all, even the default ones, leaving you with a basic cloud sync feature. Still not as lightweight as some other competitors though.
