Cuaron redefined the look of the series so much every director coming after him tried to ape it.

That doesn't mean Chris Columbus didn't an important and great bit of world building, especially in the first one.

Cuaron would probably have been the wrong choice for the first two movies and Yates definitely would have been, since he only seems to be able to do drab and dark.
