Large numbers of Americans believe the founders intended the U.S. to be a Christian nation. The belief is especially strong among Republicans and their white evangelical base.

American "protestants" are fake protestants. It's off-brand Catholicism, it's "I can't believe it's not Catholicism", it's "Walmart Cola Catholicism", minus grand and beautiful buildings, minus religious tradition, with crazy paranoid "fire and brimstone" preachers.
