Glad to see someone trying a Zelda game for the first time. If you end up liking Botw, make sure to try Tears of the Kingdom! It's what I've been playing recently and it's so good it brings a tear to my eye. I'd be curious to hear your perspective on it as a new player. I feel like I'm super biased on Zelda games since I've played them since I was young, so sometimes it's hard for me to determine if a Zelda game is actually good or if I'm just clapping through rose tinted glasses!
Well, I'm finding that I'm currently only doing the shrines because the main quests are too hard (i get one hit killed). So it's actually getting a bit tedious. I like the mechanics of the game, I don't like the fact that weapons break and can't be repaired.
I am not overly keen on having to cook food, I don't like that in any game but it seems its not necessary to progress in this game.
Horses are great, but incredibly difficult to steer and most of the time I'll just run instead of using the horse...
So overall I enjoyed it a lot in the beginning, but now its just getting silly difficult and it's becoming less fun for me and I might end up just not playing it anymore, which is sad because I probably just need some pointers or something.
Sorry to hear you're starting to not like it! Here are some suggestions:
Your plan to do more shrines is definitely a good one. Stamina and Health are a must to making the bosses more trivial. I know you don't like the cooking system, but another thing you can do to make fights easier is to make food that boosts your stats.
There are some simple recipes you can learn to cook with that make things a bit easier. I would encourage you to look up recipes to make it less tedious if it's a system you don't like. The cooking system is very experimentation based and there are certain ingredients that are just flat out better and go further in your recipes.
Horses are kind of situational in the game, I can give you a minor spoiler if you are interested:

Completing a certain Divine Beast gives you an ability that improves your mobility on land.Hopefully some of these things help make things a bit less tedious for you. You should also know, some of these gripes you have do carry over into the sequel (Tears of the Kingdom). It's a bit easier to get weapons, but they do still break the same. The cooking system is unchanged. Horses quickly become irrelevant as you discover different machines to build. Let me know if you want any more spoiler free tips!
Thank you! That's very helpful. I discovered some new things today and did the two rings quest, so that was actually fun.
I also went into the desert and got blasted by a giant walking star wars AT-AT, so I think I'm not ready for that area just yet 😅
I've started watching some YouTube videos for tips and stuff, because I don't want to give up on this game as I find it very relaxing (until it gets frustrating). An hour is easily spent without realising it!
