The Empire Trilogy by Raymond E. Feist.

I know there are plenty of people who don't like his Riftwar Cycle books, and I can understand they'll assume that the Empire Trilogy would not be to their liking, because it technically belongs to the series, but it was co-written with Janny Wurts and reads very differently.

The Empire Trilogy is great and it stands on its own just fine, without needing to read the entire Riftwar Cycle!
