It was strange. The smell of freedom lurking just around the corner mixed up with fear of repercussions.
I think a lot of it was fueled by the incompetence of the soviets. They hadn't left much for the people to lose - it would work the same in any country, I imagine.
You're thinking of Russia, they didn't do well from the break up of the USSR because they were always an extractive empire. The Baltic states gained their independance and I don't think anyone can seriously claim they're worse off
The Baltics did fine. Many former soviet countries took decades to recover the same life expectancy or living standards, if they ever did. The breakup was catastrophic, many older people still miss the Soviet times.
