Maybe it's a Kbin UX issue? On Lemmy I can do it as shown in this screenshot.
PS: could you please reply to this comment to confirm you've seen it? I'm concerned that if you can't leave your own image, you might also be unable to see mine.
Also, just to test something, the syntax for inline images seems to be
