Sorry, I've been in torpor for a minute. Why don't we call them Assamites anymore?

I'm in the dark too. Apparently there were name changes in version 5 of the game. I saw a few comments on Reddit with some conjecture but I'm not sure how much of it is true. Most up voted one indicated that was always their name and Assamites was just a slur everyone else called them.
