I had always hoped that Portishead would someday write a joyful upbeat song
It's a Fire comes pretty close.
Still features that somber melodramatic mewling that all their songs have, backed by music that usually sounds fit for a eulogy . Their music is like a long soundtrack to a movie about an autistic child that struggles to survive on the streets and finally dies unloved in a bus station bathroom in a puddle of piss having choked on a rotten banana.
Would be nice if Beth and the band could step out of their comfort zone and expand their style.
Hmm. The music is sexy as fuck. The lyrics are depressing.
Oot, started listening to Portishead's Third album just recently, nice username LOL
You must be thinking of a different band. In the Portishead version, the child would die in a garden, clutching a note that says "wait for me -Mummy", and the child's tears would water a rose bush that loved the child very much.
