Is matrix as full featured as signal? I trust signal regarding encryption. Should/ can I trust Matrix the same way>?

Yes, encryption is it's core concept. It's why it's actually so less user friendly in many aspects

signal used to just be an encryption layer over SMS. it was awesome, you just had to verify keys in a second channel when starting to message someone new.
