Alles hangt af van de VVD. Welke coalitie denken jullie dat het gaat worden?

  • PVV: Party against islam & migrants. They got in some trouble because of their "less morrocans" chant. They were last part of a failed coalition back in 2012. The coalition has not cooperated with them since. Their leader is Geert Wilders.
  • VVD: Center-right “let the market fix it party. Their identity was heavily intertwined with their leader, Mark Rutte. Mark Rutte (aka "teflon Mark") has been the prime-minister of the Netherlands since 2010 but has recently announced his departure.
  • NSC: Party centered around a single politician nobody knew about until the “functie elders” incident in 2020. A photographer took a picture of an internal document which included the text "Omtzigt, functie elders" which translates to "Omtzigt function elsewhere". The coalition (VVD, CDA, D66, CU) were accused of trying to get rid of Omtzigt for exposing the "Toeslagenschandaal". Omtzigt then quit the CDA and created his own party.
  • GL-PvdA: Groen Links ("Green Left") and Partij van de Arbeid ("Labour Party") decided to cooperate this election. Their leader is Frans Timmermans. He was a minister in a previous coalition and Vice-President of the European commission (yes EU government for you Americans).
  • D66: Democratic liberals. They were a major party last election but lost a significant amount of votes since then. Their leader is Rob Jetten.
  • BBB: The Boer Burger Beweging ("Farmer & Civilian Movement") the recently created party was once projected to be a major party but lost a lot of seats this election. They still have a large amount of seats in the 1e Kamer from last election and are this a potentially important coalition member.
  • CU: The Christen-Unie ("Christians United") was part of the previous Coalition. They are the more moderate version of the SGP. The SGP's policy disallows woman to participate in politics but the CU currently has a woman as leader. They are both against abortion, prostitution, and drugs.

Some parts are simplified for foreigners. Feel free to ask questions.

First, thank you for your very informative post. My daughter lives in the Netherlands, and I think it's time to start to understand a bit of your politics in case she gets your citizenship one day.

Three questions, though:

First:

They are the more moderate version of the SGP.

and

Omtzigt then quit the CDA and created his own party.

That leaves the question: Who or what is SGP and CDA? Other parties?

Second: Is that second coalition a realistic combo or just thrown together because they add up?

Third: Is there a source that lists the voting results in English? I might understand them if they are Dutch, but English would be easier for me.

  1. SGP is a very strict religious party. They've existed since 1918 and are mostly irrelevant now. CDA used to be quite a big party but has shrunk dramatically since "functie elders".
  2. The second coalition is actually the most realistic combo. The VVD already announced they will refuse to cooperate with the PVV. However, they were a bit vague about the exclusion so it could still happen.
  3. Yes, wikipedia does.

The fact that NSC is almost guaranteed to be in the coalition could have consequences for her. They are planning to reduce the amount of foreign students and get rid of the tax breaks for expats.

Thanks again!

So basically the last coalition has been burned to the ground at the polling stations, but the politicians try to form something similar with the people who probably moved from CDA and CU to the new NSC, right?

That this NSC does not like foreign students is bad, though. On the other hand, the PVV probably does not like them (maybe hate them even more), either, so we should be thankful that they at least think of building an alternative.

Many thanks for the wikipedia link, it provides the info I was searching for, and links to all the parties, so I can get even more details. I'm amazed that a non-Dutch version of that page exists - which is the main reason I did not look it up on my own in the first place.

Yes, basically.

The anti foreign student stance seems to have been introduced quite recently by the NSC. I haven't heard it before from the PVV. However, there's a good chance the PVV will pick that up because it's getting quite popular. The consequences of these plans probably depend on whether you're from the EEA or not due to EU laws.

Hello, Neighbor! Yes, definitly from the EU. I don't think they can actually forbid her to study, but they can make it painful. One key issue is the language. I've heard of ideas to offer university courses only in Dutch in the future to reduce the number of foreign students. She is learning Dutch, but she is not yet fluent enough to take a language exam. I hope she will do this sometimes next year.

I hope for the best for your country. That whatever comes out of this election will be good for you. You are good people, you don't deserve the PVV.
