From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Linux is a family of open source Unix-like operating systems based on the Linux kernel, an operating system kernel first released on September 17, 1991 by Linus Torvalds. Linux is typically packaged in a Linux distribution (or distro for short).

Distributions include the Linux kernel and supporting system software and libraries, many of which are provided by the GNU Project. Many Linux distributions use the word "Linux" in their name, but the Free Software Foundation uses the name GNU/Linux to emphasize the importance of GNU software, causing some controversy.

I grew tired of shitty "Top 10 Linux distros in ${CURRENT_YEAR}" articles so I wrote a blogpost, that I would personally consider helpful when I was starting out, so I can simply link it to people when they ask my opinion on a beginner distro.

Objective criticism is welcome and encouraged.

I specifically mentioned Manjaro as not recommended because of all the silly stuff they did. It will most probably not break on you, but forgetting to renew your SSL certificate like 4 times in a row does not really instill confidence.

It's really sad that Manjaro has had those little issues. When it works it's such a nice distro. I recommended it and a few other distros to several people back before I knew about the issues with Manjaro, and of the ones I recommended (Mint, Pop OS, Ubuntu, and Manjaro) it was definitely the consistent favorite of everyone that tried it.

They definitely know how to turn the Linux desktop experience into a nice one, and if they could make Pamac less buggy, stop DDISing the AUR and letting their certificates expire, and maybe ditch the whole two week delay thing that breaks AUR dependencies, it'd probably be the best new user distro.
