I haven't played the game since the update that removed several planets, and I'm yet to start the new content from that expansion and beyond. I would like to get back to date with the game (yes I know it's been years since), but since so many things have happened since then, the game assumes that I'm entering directly to the latest expansion and skipping everything before that. What's the "canonical" order of missions from Beyond Light onward to get myself up to date without accidentally spoiling myself?

MAJOR EXPANSIONS:

  • Beyond Light
  • The Witch Queen
  • Lightfall

CURRENT SEASON:

  • Season of the Deep (ends Aug 22, 2023)

OPTIONAL STUFF:

  • 30th Anniversary Pack (1 dungeon and 1 pve activity... and also the ability to get gjallerhorn)

Of all this content, Witch Queen campaign and story was the best. You can definitely play it without playing through Beyond Light, but playing through Beyond Light is how you get the stasis subclass for your character.

Lightfall is decent and the storyline may be sort of still unfolding, but playing through the Lightfall story line is how you get the strand subclass for your character.

Seasonal stories have been improving but you kinda need to know what happened prior.

The 30th anniversary content (Dares of Eternity pve activity and Grasp of Avarice dungeon) is pretty decent and very "meta" with call backs to stuff from Destiny 1. Some people balk at the price, but I think it's fine.

I honestly don't know what you have to buy yo get the new dungeon (I always buy the full 1yr pass with expansion + seasons + whatever else comes with it), but I hear it's a decent activity... but with a slog of a boss.

Beyond light had the Deep Stone Crypt raid. It's phenomenal. Not overly complex but not a crazy long or hard play through. I think they really successfully threaded the needle with this one.

Witch queen had the Vow of the Disciple raid. It's probably second most complex of all the raids currently in the game, aside from Last Wish (which was from Forsaken expansion).

Lightfall brought the Root of Nightmares. It's the easiest raid and serves as a good intro to raiding.

Along the way they also brought back Vault of Glass and King's Fall raids. Both were brought back with some updates and changes.

You should also know that the way subclasses work has all been overhauled, the way mods work has been overhauled, and the way shaders work has been overhauled. You're also able to now make any piece of non-exotic armor look like any other piece of non-exotic armor (this is called transmog in the wider gaming community, in case you're familiar with that term). Oh and there's an in-game way to save loadouts now too.

I don't play as much PvP so I will let others chime in on that.

Gambit hasn't changed all that much aside from balance changes.

Story wise a lot has happened. Some people we used to hate, we don't hate as much anymore... or are even friends with them. There's a new big bad guy in town (The Witness).... honestly go watch some videos from Byf or someone else on the story line and lore. They'll do a better job and it's way too much to re-write here.

Adding:

• You need to buy Dungeon Keys with silver
• This doesn't apply to 30th Anniversary or Deep

If you buy Season of the Deep or 30th Anniversary Pack you get Grasp of Avarice and Ghosts of the Deep.

Edit: This might not apply if you buy the Deluxe edition of expacs.

I think when you buy the Lightfall "annual pass" you get access to 2 dungeons coming out during the Lightfall year.

I don't think Season of the Deep stand alone includes the Ghosta of the Deep dungeon access.

30th anniversary definitely includes access to Grasp of Avarice dungeon.
