Is the Retroid any good? Every emulation handheld I've managed to get has been trash so far.
Can just get a steam deck. The emulators run great on it so far.
There's a pretty gigantic gap between a $150 device and a $400 device.
That is true, but given the option to save up for a steam deck if you can, the difference in performance and capabilities is also a pretty gigantic leap.
This thing is also pretty lightweight, while the Steam Deck is practically a boat anchor.
Yeah I’m genuinely surprised how ergonomics don’t seem to be a factor in recommendations I see for the Steam Deck.
I tried to bring my Deck out and about with me, but after a couple of weeks I went running back to my OLED Switch. The Deck is fine for sitting around the house but I find it pretty cumbersome otherwise.
It’s fantastic, runs most psp games at 3x resolution. Also runs many ps2 and GameCube games playable, if not well. Dreamcast runs great, the screen is bright and colours are vibrant. I do want a steam deck to go with this for things that need a bit more power but this is pocketable and will be on me when I go out.
Dang, PS2 and GameCube playable? That's honestly a shock to me, I wasn't even sure PS1 would be doable.
PS1 runs perfectly in duckstation, with upscaling and filters. I have started a tomb raider play through and it looks amazing at 720p…
Retro Game Corps has a very in depth review on it, as well as other similar handhelds. This probably has the least compromises for a device of this price.
My recommendation is a homebrewable Switch. It runs pretty much anything you'd want in terms of emulation up to but not including the Wii U and PS3. Usually you can find them second-hand pretty cheap.
I've got a real early switch I've been wanting to mod for a while, I'm just worried about ending up with a cheap shim that screws the connections on my rails.
I did it without a jig. It was early days and I used a paperclip to manually bridge the pins. As long as you're careful it's actually pretty safe. Just push it towards pin 9 and 10, and it should work.
I've also seen people mod their joycons to make the button you push to slide the joycon into a RCM button, which I might do.
In any case, just don't jam anything in willy-nilly and it shouldn't break. Same with the jig. You can set the switch to automatically go into RCM mode as well once the modding is done, removing the need for the jig, although the switch will then not boot normally when you don't have a payload for it. The only time this happens realistically is when the battery depletes.
What ones have you tried? The Retroid Pocket 3+ is good, but avoid the Flip (hinge issues)
What kind of issues? The clamshell design being more pocketable was a huge reason I was considering the flip over the retroid.
