It’s called “fashion”, that’s all. VW group was early and put it through Porsche, Audi and now VW, and soon others followed. Much like the LED light bars that go across the fronts of cars for better visibility, it was for a reason but now everyone needs one.
I’ve got a putty gray 1st Edition ID.3 now for 2¾ years - love the thing beyond words, and the combo of the putty gray on the outside and off-white and light gray interior is what makes it feel fresh to me. Then again, I’m old enough to remember when metallic paint was a premium item on a car, then it was always there and of course - when everyone is Premium, no one is.
Would I have preferred the VW Texas Yellow from my ‘73 bug? Hell yeah - but this was fresh and classy enough to stand out in a parking lot sea of black, silver & dark blue cars, and I love that.
