nothing about 'if an instance is willing to allow hateful communities like TD, I expect their comment sections will be more toxic' or 'i like the idea of defederating from instances that allow hateful communities' indicated that you werent actually talking about the instance currently under fire for supposedly (but not actually) allowing hateful communities like TD
Maybe you're right. I wasn't very clear. I intended to use the TD subreddit as an example of a toxic community. I didn't mean to imply that everyone should immediately defederate form an instance that hosts a community named TD, even if that community has done nothing problematic yet. I meant to say that, if an instance does become host to a toxic community and does nothing to moderate it or remove it, that might be a good reason to defederate with them. Toxicity in one community on an instance will spill into others.
Maybe that will lead to even more segregated echo Chambers, though. Maybe that can become a different problem.
That said, the name the_donald has a bad history and I'm glad that the community was removed. IMO, that name has become synonymous with a toxic community.
