This was the only move they had. It was bad enough but the PR they would get for fining Dermott would have been terrible. Bettman never thought this through and just assumed players would fall in line like they usually do. Respect to Dermott but it didn't even take a big name in a big market. The rest of the players should take note and be more vocal.
I've got nothing but admiration for Dermott here, but I'm actually kind of surprised how quickly the NHL switched on this.
Now I totally agree with what you're saying, but even then...I can't believe how quickly they u-turned on it. Begs the question, how much time, if any did they put into the original discussion.
I'm pretty sure the conversation went like this:
"we are getting rid of on ice event night uniforms and attire"
"What about tape"
" Yeah sure that too"
