I wouldn't say it's essential to homebrew to get beer that is hoppy (aroma) but less bitter, so definitely a chance you can find something that works for you being produced today from a brewery. There's so much variety at the moment and plenty of styles to dive into. Since you mentioned bitterness, see if you can find things by their IBU (bitterness score) and work from that?

Thank you, informative and encouraging! I want to be able to tolerate local store beers, but even Coors, at the lowest level of bitterness on the scale, just repels my tastebuds. I can't even finish 1/3 a can before I have to hand it off to a loved one. I love hard ciders like Woodchuck Original and sour, fruity ales (Example: Boulevard Brewing Company's Berry Noir). (I was raised right.... I never waste a fresh beer. ) I'm even raising my own hops, that's how much I love the aroma.
