I'm obviously new. The settings are quite self‐explanatory, but I couldn’t find info on the Matrix input field. What is its purpose?

Matrix is an encrypted chat platform. Think Discord but a lot earlier in development and tied to the Fediverse.

I know, I have a Matrix account. But why should I link it with this Lemmy account? What’s the purpose?

It would be an alternative to DM’s which, I think, can technically be viewed by the instance owner. If you have a Matrix account linked then you would have an additional option on your profile to receive a secure message.

I just added mine to my profile but I don’t think the encrypted message option has appeared yet. Not sure if it takes time once added.

When I visit your profile, I can see "Send Secure Message" (which links to matrix) right next to regular "Send Message". So it's probably working.

I feel like it's similar to the way people would put their Discord/Twitter/etc. in their Reddit profile. Helps other people find you on other platforms if you want them to.
