Don't tell people "it's easy", and seven more things Kbin, Lemmy, and the fediverse can learn from Mastodon (UPDATED)

This adds several new sections to the previous version -- including an update on what's happened since then. Here's the new table of contents:

I'm flashing!!!!!
But first, some background

  1. Don't tell people "it's easy"
  2. Improve the "getting-started experience"
  3. Keep scalability and sustainability in mind
  4. Prioritize accessibility
  5. Get ready for trolls, hate speech, harassment, spam, porn, and disinformation
  6. Invest in moderation tools
  7. Experiment to find what approaches are a good fit for the current state of the software
  8. Values matter

@thenexusofprivacy @lemmy @fediversenews I find that technical people are very much unaware of how complicated the things they do are for the average person. To the extent that they'll often be really rude about it.

I am a technical person and even the account creation process on lemmy had me thinking something was broken.. I created an account and it said it would need to be verified but nothing about how, or when. Most systems send you an email to confim you account is attached to one.. I tried to log in and it just spun.

Some time later.... I got a confirmation and it worked.
