Wasn't this actually about putting these subjects in a different part of their education? Seen this on Reddit, and it was found to be misleading.

Yes. This is more about moving things around. That said it is nice to have a hawk like watch on education in India as many state governments have tried to meddle the syllabus to reflect their ideologies more. Communists in kerela were accused of promoting Atheism, BJP in Karnataka wanted kids to learn more about its leaders and less about Tipu Sultan and so on.
