That's why I bought an automower. Always found the idea cool, but couldn't justify the price. But then a couple of summers back I was mowing for like the fourth weekend straight and yet by Thursday of the next week it was already seed head city... So in a bit of a rage I bought a Worx Landroid and spent a day putting it in.
It worked really well, but just wasn't big enough for our yard so could only do a little under half of it with any sort of reliability. The concept proved it worked though, so I bit the bullet and got the Husqvarna at around 3x the price.
Worth every cent! Now I don't need to mow at all through most of the year, and only need to give it a hand maybe once or twice over summer.
I did actually look into that, a mate has one, but it's just not suitable for my block.
I recently bought a big battery self propelled mower and have started training up my 11yr old daughter.
Having kids to mow the lawn is some commitment, I'd prefer to just buy the automower to be honest.
There's LIDAR / SLAM units being made now, so they'll be more capable for odd ball shaped yards where a boundary wire and random bouncing around wasn't good enough.
My lawn just isn't suitable, steep and rough, training up daughter has been enjoyable for both of us.
My mate with a Husqvarna robot mower bought my old petrol mower because there are still areas his bot can't do.
