UK Politics
General Discussion for politics in the UK.
Please don't post to both [email protected] and [email protected] .
Pick the most appropriate, and put it there.
Posts should be related to UK-centric politics, and should be either a link to a reputable news source for news, or a text post on this community.
Opinion pieces are also allowed, provided they are not misleading/misrepresented/drivel, and have proper sources.
If you think "reputable news source" needs some definition, by all means start a meta thread. (These things should be publicly discussed)
Posts should be manually submitted, not by bot. Link titles should not be editorialised.
Disappointing comments will generally be left to fester in ratio, outright horrible comments will be removed.
Message the mods if you feel something really should be removed, or if a user seems to have a pattern of awful comments.
[email protected] appears to have vanished! We can still see cached content from this link, but goodbye I guess! :'(

It's never going to happen, it's just tedious politicking.
We said that about brexit
Incorporatoon in the ECHR is an explicit tenet of the good Friday agreement. They cant pull us out without undermining that agreement, which would result in eye-watering sanctions from America and Europe.
(And also in any normal timeline - political ostracation. Although burning everything to the ground seems to be quite a popular policy these days.)
Well I hope not. Wouldnt trust these morons though.
This sort of complacent attitude allows things like this to slip through though. Do be careful with that mindset.
It isn't likely to happen for a number of reasons but a big one is that the Good Friday Agreement requires that the ECHR be enforceable in Northern Ireland. What this means is that if you want to actually leave the ECHR you would either have to break or renegotiate the GFA, neither of which is likely to happen (or at least likely to happen without adverse consequence - Ireland, the rest of the EU and the USA have all said as much).
And because of all this, it would likely need to go to a referendum.
Who is going to vote to remove their own human rights?
People would probably do it to remove other people's human rights...
Except that's not how it works.
I know that, but that seems to be how a lot of right wing people think about these things. They want to take rights from the out group and think it will never happen to them because they are in the in group
