Metroidvania is a subgenre of video games focused on guided non-linearity and utility-gated exploration. The term, popularized by video game critic Jeremy Parish, is a portmanteau of Metroid and Castlevania.

I heard it was great for a long time but didn't pay much attention because I'm not really into the cute anime at style and setting. I finally picked it up when it was cheap recently and found some of the best gameplay that I've seen in a while. Plenty of exploration, tight controls, well balanced difficulty, everything a great game needs.

This one really surprised me. I love that it was made right before hollow Knight came out so it feels refreshing in that sense before everyone started copying the formula. This game also got me into SHMUPS, it takes a little getting used to the weird hitbox but once it clicks, it clicks! It's super satisfying finding all the power ups scattered all over the map.
