The title and body of this post are incredibly misleading. Payton was referring to last years Broncos when he said “worst coaching job in history” and the thing about being embarrassed.
The only thing he said about the Jets was that they’re doing what the Broncos did last year in that they’re trying to win the off-season and he thinks it won’t turn out well. It’s hardly blasting them.
“It doesn’t happen often where an NFL team or organization gets embarrassed,” Payton said. “And that happened here. Part of it was their own fault, relative to spending so much (expletive) time trying to win the offseason – the PR, the pomp and circumstance, marching people around and all this stuff.
“We’re not doing any of that. The Jets did that this year. You watch."
"I can see it coming. Remember when (former Washington owner) Dan Snyder put that Dream Team together? I was at the Giants (in 2000). I was a young coach. I thought, ‘How are we going to compete with them? Deion’s (Sanders) there now.’ That team won eight games or whatever. So, listen…just put the work in.”
He spent more than 1 sentence talking about Jets. Basically, he's saying Jets did what Broncos did last year, and that Jets like the 2022 Broncos and the 2000 Giants will fall flat on their face. Sounds like he's got a bit of beef here to me.
That’s what I said. He said the Broncos did things wrong and embarrassed themselves last year. Then he said he thinks the Jets are doing the same thing this year. Then he listed other examples where it’s happened in the past. The statement wasn’t about dissing the Jets, he was talking about why the Broncos were so bad last year and used other examples to support that and also threw some shade at the Jets. But that doesn’t mean he “blasted” them and the order you put the quotes in the body make it seem like he was saying the Jets embarrassed themselves and it is the worst coaching job.
That's my impression and the impression of some journalists - a very direct criticism if you will of Jets by Payton. This kind of fighting words directed at another team isn't common in NFL. There are several articles off this interview and they all had similar impression.
Whether or not it’s a direct criticism isn’t really my problem. But putting “…blasts Jets: ‘worst coaching job in history’” in the title and “‘It doesn't happen often where an NFL team or organization gets embarrassed,’ ‘The Jets did that this year. You watch.’” in the body implies that Payton said the Jets have the worst coaching job in history and that the Jets have already embarrassed themselves, which Payton never said. He said the Broncos last year had the worst coaching job in history and embarrassed themselves. Then in addition to that compares the Broncos’ last off-season with the Jets’ off-season this year and says that’s one of the reasons for the embarrassment. Which is very different from what your post implies.
I’m just saying I dont think it’s right to editorialize the article in the way you did in the title and body to misrepresent direct quotes from a real person to make it seem like they said something they didn’t. If you want to comment on what he said about the Jets, that’s fine, but directly quote what he said about the jets like you did in your earlier comments instead of mashing together quotes about last year’s Broncos and this year’s Jets to make it seem like he’s saying something he’s not.
