This is how Ukraine (+others) gave up their nuclear weapons.
And by reneging on treaties and agreements of such importance is how the US gives up its credibility as a nation in the eyes to others around the world with whom they may need that trust in the future. Talk about shooting oneself in the foot.
Go read the text of the agreement. The US didn't renege on anything in this case.
