This is how Ukraine (+others) gave up their nuclear weapons.
And by reneging on treaties and agreements of such importance is how the US gives up its credibility as a nation in the eyes to others around the world with whom they may need that trust in the future. Talk about shooting oneself in the foot.
Go read the text of the agreement. The US didn't renege on anything in this case.
(3)- Refrain from economic coercion designed to subordinate to their own interest the exercise by Ukraine, the Republic of Belarus and Kazakhstan of the rights inherent in its sovereignty and thus to secure advantages of any kind.
They gave up their nukes they didn't give up their knowledge of how to build one. Their is a non zero possibility that Ukraine already has a nuke. And if they do there is a 0% chance Kyiv will fall without Moscow being the 3rd city to be unfounded by nuclear blast.
