I'll second Dungeon Crawler Carl. Didn't really grab me right away, but they're very different than a lot of what I read and are an excellent change of pace. Really fun as audiobooks.

Why do you think the MC in Mage Errant and Mother of Learning put people off? If it's a slow start thing, I don't really mind - I've read through most huge fantasy series and the ones I've loved most seem to be those that take time to develop.
From the Mother of Learning side, the main character is an extreme introvert (which is actually handled moderately well, and has a legitimate in story reason though it doesn't come up for awhile) and more than a bit misanthropic/arrogant. A big part of the appeal is seeing them deal with their issues and legitimately becoming a better person without it being rubbed in our faces or feeling forced.
