I live pretty nearby, and walk past it regularly. This is the current view from the footbridge over 30th.

In its present state it looks more like a detention center than a school. I'm sure once there is greenery back in place it will have more character.

Yeah, it's kind of industrial-looking from that angle right now, but on the other side there's some quaint brick-work going up and it's starting to look good. I'll try to snap a picture from there, next.

I can't imagine breka being the best material for our weather/climate

It's just a thin facade of bricks. Not structural at all.
