The Mavericks are trading Luka Doncic, Maxi Kleber and Markieff Morris to the Lakers for Anthony Davis, Max Christie and a 2029 first-round pick, per Shams

Edit: Full trade:

  • Lakers: Luka Doncic, Maxi Kleber, Markieff Morris

  • Mavericks: Anthony Davis, Max Christie, 2029 LAL 1st

  • Jazz: Jalen Hood-Schifino, 2025 Clippers 2nd, 2025 Mavericks 2nd”

Edit: need stern do come back and veto this for “basketball reasons” Mavs GM deserves to get fired for this one

No idea why the Mavs do this, was Luka unhappy?

[–] Death__BySnuSnu 12 points 11 hours ago (3 children)

This had to have been fixed by the league. There's absolutely NOTHING in this for the Mavs. Horrible, horrible trade!

don't forget "the league" is the owners, why would the other 28 owners be okay with fixing such a closed transaction with no chance at Luka themselves? it's not fixed, sometimes people just do dumb shit.

What??! Nothing?? AD is not of the top 75 players in league history, as per NBA!! (I'll keep writing when I'll stop laughing)

Like the nets got 5 firsts for bridges, the jazz got 5 for Gobert, how is this the best you got for Luka? NO ONE KNEW HE WAS EVEN AVAILABLE

Everything I’m seeing right now is saying he didn’t ask out either, I’m not even a Mavs fan and it feels like a gut punch lol

This feels like a league trade for ratings. How else can you explain it? This is such an incredibly lopsided trade. With the league ratings having been down for so long, they had to do something to get their prime markets back. Next up, Giannis to the Knicks for the NY pizza rat and a carton of milk from the nearest bodega.

I feel so bad for you, my condolences.

That's exactly what I was thinking as a Knicks fan, like we gave 5 firsts for Mikal and it only takes ONE for fucking Doncic??? He's a 25 year old walking triple double, perennial MVP candidate.

And of course it had to be the Lakers who get another franchise player for the next decade basically for free. Fuck sake.

I mean AD is worth a few firsts as well but yes it is still an underpay for what they could have gotten in a bidding war.

[–] David_Eight 9 points 11 hours ago (3 children)

I mean, there is no other possible explanation right? I'm a life long Lakers fan and this makes no sense.

[–] acosmichippo 1 points 3 hours ago* (last edited 3 hours ago)

the explanation is Hanlon's razor. some people are incompetent.

many Mavs fans at reddit are saying that new ownership wanted to sabotage the team, making it easier then to relocate the team to Vegas.

[–] acosmichippo 3 points 2 hours ago* (last edited 2 hours ago)

they are going to make a new team in Vegas, the league isn't abandoning the 9th biggest city in the country. That's just silly.

Maybe ownership had financial concerns, but it has nothing to do with relocation.

[–] [email protected] 6 points 11 hours ago (1 children)

They didn't get much back either.

[–] David_Eight 6 points 10 hours ago (1 children)

I think if they were the same age you could argue defense blah blah blah. But they're not lol.

Christie and what will probably be a late first round pick? Like you guys don't want nothing else? Is this a prank lol? Ok

[–] [email protected] 0 points 10 hours ago (1 children)

But he's a free agent after next season. If they wait until next season to trade him on an expiring, they will get nothing back like Raptors got nothing for Siakam.

[–] David_Eight 5 points 9 hours ago (2 children)

No dude, just no.

Luca is a 25y perennial MVP candidate and hasn't even peaked probably. I'm pretty sure every team in the league would be in a bidding war if they knew he was available, even next year.

[–] acosmichippo 2 points 2 hours ago

exactly, mostly because of bird rights. if you trade for the guy you can resign him even if you are over the 2nd apron.

on the other hand if he goes to free agency only teams $50m UNDER the salary cap can sign him, which is very few teams.

See my comment below. There must be a good reason Mavs would've done this. They knew something. Like Luka was going to sign with Lakers. Lakers had clear their cap space to give Luka a max in 2026. That is the ONLY logic to this move - they are doing this NOW to get something back instead of losing him for nothing, or getting nothing for an expiring Luka because everyone knows Luka isn't signing with anyone but Lakers. THAT is the ONLY rational thing that makes sense out of this. If Luka was happily going to go where they want to trade him, the market for him would be huge. But if Luka comes out and says I ain't signing with anyone but Lakers, market's dead, gone, caput done.
