I see it everywhere, reddit comments, lemmy, news articles and mastodon itself. How did this misspelling become so common?

Just from the way it's pronounced in English: ma · stuh · daan. It sounds more like an 'a' than an 'o'.

in british english we pronounce it as mahs • tuh • don

I pronounce it mas · to · don. Maybe the miss-spelled name for it is based on how people pronounce it verbarly.
