using a front basket

Really? I've always assumed that would make steering harder than panniers on the back (which is what I use).

Steering is slightly impacted, but wide bars can help a lot with that.

Main benefit for me is being able to use my arms to lift the load when negotiating kerbs potholes and the like, it has saved me plenty a rear rim!

There is convenience stuff too, like being able to use any old bag or parcel, having quick and easy access, having somewhere to quickly stash your jacket with the help of bungees.

Besides where else are you gonna put your bunch of flowers, bottle of wine and a baguette?? 😜
