There's a great part in Clavell's Nobel House, set in 1960s Hong Kong, where a Chinese man is raging against the British system of justice.
"Why should the rich and poor be treated the same?! Why else would I strive to be rich?!"
Something to think on.
That's a really good book.
Loved all his work except Gai Jin and couldn't finish Whirlwind. No idea why those didn't click, tried reading them several times.
But goddamn, Shogun to Tai Pan to Nobel House was a fucking blast! King Rat is a wild trip as well.
