Some people use the hammer and sickle as a general left symbol rather than explicitly Soviet.

the hammer and sickle symbol does not symbolise the USSR even if it is most closely associated with it. unlike the swastika being coopted by Nazi Germany and forever tainted, the hammer and sickle has remained in use by many different factions on the left.
