I heard something about a rogue employee selling a studio to a wealthy scammer for a dollar (and a massive kickback). Does that describe disco elysium’s situation?

According to Kurvitz (game designer and writer of the prequel novel Sacred and Terrible Air) and Rostov (lead artist):

Kompus (Zaum Studio CEO) bought a majority share in Zaum
Kompus bought four early sketches from Zaum for 1 GBP
Kompus sold back those sketches to Zaum for 4.8 million EUR
When they began raising questions, Kurvitz and Rostov were demoted and later fired
