Throwback post to the Steotchalone 2020 (or however you spell it). I don't normally take part in any time-intensive or team events because frankly I wouldn't be able to keep up, but during the lockdown they ran a version designed for solo participation and I signed up on a total whim.
Our instructions were to basically pick a palette of six shades with suitable contrast, then await the pattern!
Thoroughly enjoyed this stitch. It was amazing seeing it come together with so few colours involved, and the texture of the hair and beard is really cool.
You can tell I'm proud of it because I basically never FFO anything otherwise. I ironed this and everything! ๐
If I'm remembering right, that was done with blends ie you thread the needle with a strand of two different colours and stitch like that.
I think the instructions also specifically said to not railroad those bits (railroading is a way to make your stitches lie flat and neat), so the result was the blended colours sort of twisting around each other randomly and giving a cool messy texture.
Really clever pattern, all round!
I saw some of those blended colors when I was at the craft store the other day and wondered what they were used for lol!

If so, those are actually a bit different and have multiple colours along one length of floss. Whereas with a blend it's just literally taking one strand of your colour A, and one strand of your colour B, and threading the needle with both at the same time.
You see it called for sometimes to get a particular effect like in this project, or sometimes to help create a sort of mid-way shade between the two used in the blend that otherwise doesn't exist as its own colour.
The variegated ones like in the pics are really cool as well though, I like to use them for blackwork especially!
I just recently watched your blackwork tutorial! The pattern from the video is next on my to-do list, so I might try it with some of the multicolor floss now!

Blackwork is maybe my fave type of stitching I've tried so far, honestly, it's extremely satisfying (and so quick compared to cross stitch!). Looking forward to seeing what you come up with ๐
