World News
A community for discussing events around the World
Rules:
-
Rule 1: posts have the following requirements:
- Post news articles only
- Video links are NOT articles and will be removed.
- Title must match the article headline
- Not United States Internal News
- Recent (Past 30 Days)
- Screenshots/links to other social media sites (Twitter/X/Facebook/Youtube/reddit, etc.) are explicitly forbidden, as are link shorteners.
-
Rule 2: Do not copy the entire article into your post. The key points in 1-2 paragraphs is allowed (even encouraged!), but large segments of articles posted in the body will result in the post being removed. If you have to stop and think "Is this fair use?", it probably isn't. Archive links, especially the ones created on link submission, are absolutely allowed but those that avoid paywalls are not.
-
Rule 3: Opinions articles, or Articles based on misinformation/propaganda may be removed. Sources that have a Low or Very Low factual reporting rating or MBFC Credibility Rating may be removed.
-
Rule 4: Posts or comments that are homophobic, transphobic, racist, sexist, anti-religious, or ableist will be removed. “Ironic” prejudice is just prejudiced.
-
Posts and comments must abide by the lemmy.world terms of service UPDATED AS OF 10/19
-
Rule 5: Keep it civil. It's OK to say the subject of an article is behaving like a (pejorative, pejorative). It's NOT OK to say another USER is (pejorative). Strong language is fine, just not directed at other members. Engage in good-faith and with respect! This includes accusing another user of being a bot or paid actor. Trolling is uncivil and is grounds for removal and/or a community ban.
Similarly, if you see posts along these lines, do not engage. Report them, block them, and live a happier life than they do. We see too many slapfights that boil down to "Mom! He's bugging me!" and "I'm not touching you!" Going forward, slapfights will result in removed comments and temp bans to cool off.
-
Rule 6: Memes, spam, other low effort posting, reposts, misinformation, advocating violence, off-topic, trolling, offensive, regarding the moderators or meta in content may be removed at any time.
-
Rule 7: We didn't USED to need a rule about how many posts one could make in a day, then someone posted NINETEEN articles in a single day. Not comments, FULL ARTICLES. If you're posting more than say, 10 or so, consider going outside and touching grass. We reserve the right to limit over-posting so a single user does not dominate the front page.
We ask that the users report any comment or post that violate the rules, to use critical thinking when reading, posting or commenting. Users that post off-topic spam, advocate violence, have multiple comments or posts removed, weaponize reports or violate the code of conduct will be banned.
All posts and comments will be reviewed on a case-by-case basis. This means that some content that violates the rules may be allowed, while other content that does not violate the rules may be removed. The moderators retain the right to remove any content and ban users.

Hey UK, they aren’t gonna take you back.
They'd absolutely take them back if they asked.
But they'll never get their concessions back, if they want to rejoin the Pound will need to be replaced with the Euro, THe Ireland/UK CTA will need to be scrapped and replaced with Schengen, etc.
UK got a LOT of concessions to join the first time around that are now gone forever.
I would assume some of the concessions would come back, but definitely not to the same extent as before, e.g. Schengen yes, Euro no.
Why?
For the EU, it makes absolute sense to demand the UK checks off all the current membership criteria they demand - otherwise Romania and Croatia are going to feel like second class citizens, and the next EU enlargement is going to be a shitshow of negotiations with each member trying to pick and choose.
There’s also the spite/making an example argument, why should a former member get to create chaos in the union and dominate the debate (for YEARS) seeking a sweetheart exit deal, only to be let back in with all the rights and special privileges granted in the 70s?
Thy should have to give up Northern Ireland 😈
Getting the UK back is beneficial to all EU member states both as the second biggest economy and biggest military power of the continent. No other potential member state has anywhere near these benefits
Türkiye, if they’re still interested
Second biggest NATO defense spender, ‘developing economy’ for globalization and offshoring exploitation, major fossil fuel pipelines, significant ally who can shut off the Black Sea transit route legally and pen in the Russian warm water fleet, and a big geopolitical bridge to the Middle East. Erdogan is no saint mind you, but I would pick them as a strategic ally over Israel any day.
The UK has promise and a long history of cooperation unlike Türkiye, but they threw the baby out with the bath water and have maintained an outsized deference to the US. What doe Britain honestly bring the bloc economically aside from the London financial markets?
Sure, if Turkey gets the fuck out of EU member Cyprus and drops the threat of war against EU member Greece. Those done, yes, a friendly, peaceful, democratic Turkey would be a fantastic addition to the EU.
Ha, good one!
All UK passports should be titled EUROPEAN UNION.... AGAIN just to rub it in.
I'd love them back, but this time it's full commitment or nothing. Euro, Schengen, the whole package, no more special treatment.
This. Excluding a country as large, developed and wealthy as the UK due to them leaving in the past is stupid and shortsighted. That said, they fully and willingly lost their initial member advantages by leaving, and should not get special treatment when coming back.
Regardless of whether the UK rejoins the EU, though, they're still the most important trading partner, and it's important to maintain a healthy relationship with the bloc
I'd love the UK to rejoin the EU one day. Obviously, participation shouldn't be hop on / hop off but as long as all prequisites are met I would say the bigger the better.
Naah it's ok. Rigged elections are akin to saying something awful you didn't mean when someone pissed you off. Can't put the toothpaste back into the tube, they say. But at some point you do have to clean it up and take another tube lest your teeth will rot.
They are known for their bad teeth
