I saw a break down of the numbers, more people didn't vote than voted for either candidate

If you don't participate in elections you agree with the outcome of the elections whatever it is.

Those non voters took the risk and thus inflicted the harm on themselves.

Sadly normal for American politics. Maybe for the best since those people aren't paying attention. Hard to say.
