I always start by building a main bus, then, well, engines are already produced here, so I might as well and oh look, I already have a supply of iron here, so there's no reason to not aaaaand the spag strikes again
Dosh Doshington's sushi belt is my favorite for this - he's being rather disciplined because he's on camera but there are a lot of times he compromises his initial plan "Well the sulfuric acid is right there... there's no real reason for me to not just pipe it to the battery assemblers."

Feed it all back into the bus! Problem solved.
I found a way on how to combat this effectively. I always build the blueprints for my factories in the lab and calculate everything with the calculator. This means that its a hell lot of effort, but it means that I can't just grab everything of from somewhere else. Also I only have ironplates, copper plates, steel, stone and coal in my main bis.
