I realize this is pretty subjective but I'd like your opinions. The character is implying that calling in this situation reduces his chances to win and would have been unthinkable during the Showa period for some reason.

However I don't see anything wrong with that call, to the contrary it looks like the obvious course of action to me.

Aiming for sanshoku does not seem to reduce his shanten, it secures the dora and even unlocks a double sided wait ; he might also trade this double sided wait for junchan if he gets a pair of terminals later, giving him a shot at mangan. And all of that without being forced to discard by a riichi.

On the other hand not calling here would likely mean riichi only on a single wait which sucks...So I really have no idea what Showa players were thinking

Well damn you should be master 2 not expert 2! That actually makes perfect sense, no matter how good a hand can get, if you can't complete it it's worthless after all, and aiming for sanshoku is definitely easy to tell indeed. Thanks for your reply

I have no idea what the Showa period comment is about. Maybe there was a different mahjong meta at the time.

Yup they mentioned repeatedly throughout this manga that showa players rarely call (but never really explain why). There is even a flashback showing this character got his scar by getting sliced up for calling too much when he was young, so apparently that was no joke lol

Haha, thanks for the compliment! I'm slowly headed up to master. I'm close to expert 3. I just keep getting my rank knocked down right before I cross the threshold. I'm learning more every day though, and hopefully I'll make it up there!

After thinking through it a little more, my guess for being against calling is that it does push the hand to end faster. So if everyone is wanting to try build more satisfying hands but that one person keeps calling and forcing 2-4k hands, it can get annoying. I've had games like that where I also want to kill that one person XD.
