Most of the English would be Portuguese then as that was the lingua franca for trade in Japan.

Yes, if remember correctly. John is British but speaks a bit of Portuguese, I believe his crew doesn't speak Portuguese. Some noble japanese people Speak also a bit of Portuguese.

It's really a tiny tiny complaint because the show is so good, from the costume, photography, FX etc...

I've been constantly recommanding it.

Iirc you're completely correct, also I think one character is Spanish not Portuguese.

Yep, a Portuguese ship captain is Spsnish.
