Founded as a white-separatist cult, but it eventually recovered ... mostly.

Yeah I live there. 100% Oregonian native. And it’s still a racist hellhole but it’s a pretty one

A grade-school classmate of mine lost her older brother in the 1986 Mount Hood disaster.

Oregon is weird. It's not as bad as TMBG said, but it's weird.
