As an American, what was going on in the rest of the world while America dealt with stuff at home and in Vietnam? (self.askhistorians)

I had to take three courses of history and it seems like we never talked about the rest of the world at the time. Was Vietnam and Civil Unrest really that big in America where we thought that is what was all going on and forgot about the rest of the world?

The Troubles in Northern Ireland started in about '68, and lasted (officially) until '98.
