I would tend to agree, but very few centralized services remain "user focused" in a way that actually benefits the user. the people, almost invariably, becomes the product.
no amount of direct monitization of the person (pay for service, apps, etc) seems to compete with selling access to that person over and over again. eventually selling access to the person becomes the whole purpose of the service.
