Speaking of embarrassing.
Here is Next Generation magazine with another brilliant take.

This time on the Dreamcast port of the legendary King of Fighters '98.

PS this version was titled The King of Fighters: Dream Match 1999 as it came out a year later.

2/5....
Sure thing, buddy...

@[email protected] To be fair it seems like he was reviewing it partly asking if it would be worth buying if you already spent $50 on King of Fighters 98 the previous year? I'm scared to think of what their Third Strike review would look like. Now I get why Marvel VS Capcom 2 added the weird 3d backgrounds. If you didn't have any 3d these reviewers would put your game in a body bag.

I'm just glad that we're finally past this thing for the most part.
Seeing 2D fighters release like Melty Blood, DNF Duel, BlazBlue, Skull Girls, Rumble Fish, Blazing Strike...
Not sure if I should name Guilty Gear here as their tech is just insane and is actually 3D, which is just nuts.

And then all the rereleases by Capcom, Persona 4: Arena Ultimax, KOF 13. Heck even SVC Chaos, not even mentioning all the Hamster releases.

Much better than the early 90's.

@[email protected] Yeah it is just a weird thing to do to judge something based on the technology used rather than the content itself. It's like if a great book was printed on a scroll you'd say it sucks or if you reduced the score for not having an eReader version.

Absolutely.
There are tons of 8-bit games that hold up way better than some of the garbage that has been released the past couple of years.

Old shouldn't automatically mean bad. That's just silly thinking.

Heck KOF 98 is 20 years old in a couple of years and it's still one of the best fighting games ever created.
So reviewing it 2 years after its original arcade release and writing it off a old, outdated garbage makes me never wanting to take said reviewer seriously again.

@[email protected] In fact in my opinion the one thing that makes KOF 98 feel more dated than Third Strike is the sprite scaling and that's the most technologically advanced part of the game, haha.
