Not officially confirmed, but seems like there are others who share my suspicion that the reason they can't is they're not willing to give up whatever anti consumer telemetry they built the new app around.
Of all my various connected devices, none call home more often than Sonos. Well, it attempts to, anyway. I'm blocking all those requests.
