I expect this is less an attempt to actually seize Russian territory and more a way to prevent Russian forces from organising on the "safe" side of the border. Just prove the point that they absolutely can push across the border if they choose to and it disrupts Russia's ability to marshal forces and equipment close to the front

Three day Russian invasion turns into Ukraine invading Russia. That would be amazing.

if they hold it, it would be a good bargaining chip for negotiations... "we'll give back your land, you give back ours"
