There's a law preventing them from doing so because it's a minor

From the article:

The name of the 11-year-old has been released but Gizmodo is opting not to share it. The decision to do a bunch of swatting calls was dumb and incredibly dangerous and hopefully, this kid eventually learns his lesson. But he’s still young and here’s hoping this doesn’t ruin his life in ways that he can never bounce back from, though he does face very serious charges.

I appear to have been mistaken and was likely thinking about this law, https://www.justice.gov/archives/jm/criminal-resource-manual-46-protection-identity-child-witnesses-and-victims

It protects witnesses and victims, not criminals. So good guy gizmodo.

This solidifies my belief that the press releases the names for some kind of vengeace against the criminals.
